Harrow Harmony was formed in 1999 by Hilary Musgrave and several enthusiastic members of her Singing for Starters a choral course for beginners run under the auspices of Harrow Choral Society. Many wished to carry on their singing after the course ended so were keen to create a new choir. A committee was formed, a constitution written and the rest, as they say, is history!
The choir rehearses on Friday evenings from 7.45pm to 9.30pm at South Harrow Methodist Church in Walton Avenue. We sing a wide variety of music including classical pieces by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Faure, Schubert and Verdi as well as pieces by modern composers such as Howard Goodall and Karl Jenkins. However, we also perform popular songs by Abba and the Beatles and have a large repertoire of songs from the shows.
Although many in the choir are able to read music, it is not a pre-requisite and there are no formal auditions. You only need to enjoy singing and performing and be enthusiastic.
Harrow Harmony performs three main concerts locally during the year. One, to celebrate Christmas in which there is always a chance for audience participation, another at Easter and a larger concert in the summer. Usually, we invite our audience to join us for refreshments after our concerts and our hospitality is now legendary!
As well as these concerts we have in the recent past been invited to take part in the Pinner Pantomime on several occasions. This is a local event held on the last Thursday in November and is a family evening of musical entertainment taking place on the streets of Pinner and culminates in an impressive firework display.
We perform pieces by Gilbert and Sullivan, choral works by Faure and Mozart, traditional folk songs and a selection of songs by Abba and the Beatles as well as some well-known TV themes! We also have guest musicians at some concerts.
